In device manager, all the USB ports have a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. When I tell Vista to update the drivers, they say the most current driver is already there.

He did recently install Vista updates, but I believe this started sometime last week. This is an Acer Aspire laptop running Vista 32 bit.
