Your state is essentially your mood at any given time of day. Your mood is influenced by how you feel about yourself at that point in time. Here are three principles of confidence that anyone can use to their advantage — and some real-life examples to help you apply them in any area of your life.

Think about someone you know whom you consider extremely confident. When you first met them, you probably knew they were confident before they even started speaking. They made eye contact, shook your hand firmly and stood up straight. Now do a quick inventory of your body. How are you breathing? We all get in negative states, which can lead to slouching, shallow breathing or hanging your head. Thinking positive can manifest itself in several ways. Instead of getting hung up on all the ways something could go wrong, focus on all the ways it could go right.

What you focus on becomes your reality — and that includes what you focus on within your own mind. Replace negative words with positive ones and start seeing the bright side of situations. What do you think being confident entails? This sort of core belief severely limits you. Being confident means that if you do fail, you can pick yourself back up and try again instead of throwing in the towel. Once you start taking actionable steps toward your goal of being confident, your beliefs will gradually start to solidify.

What do those principles have in common? They are all about becoming the master of your emotions. You must change your perspective and your mindset, and choose to be confident. That can sometimes be easier said than done — but there are specific actions you can take that will help you apply these principles to being confident.

So, test yourself. See if you can make it through one small battle at a time. When we have feelings of low self-worth or low self-esteem, we tend to ruminate on past mistakes. This goes back to that negativity bias. We can remember criticisms better than compliments, failures better than successes, losses better than wins. You can be whoever you want to be. You are not handcuffed by your past actions or beliefs or mistakes.

Always someone richer and someone poorer. Someone prettier and someone uglier. Someone smarter and someone less intelligent. So, just focus on doing your best. Being the best that you can be. When you hold yourself in certain ways, it sends signals to your brain that reinforce feelings of confidence.

Nervous behaviors like speaking quickly, fidgeting and darting your eyes around are signs of a lack of confidence. There are several different types of deep breathing exercises to help you slow down, calm anxiety and feel more confident. Start small. Tackle one room at a time. Then, decorate your space with things that make you happy.

It just might introduce you to your inner genius. If you want to build your confidence, be more compassionate towards yourself. To get better at this, you may want to try mindfulness meditation. Acknowledging those things without being judgmental or getting swept up in negativity will help you to be more confident and at peace with yourself.
